Announcement of USDA-NIFA-HSI Summer Internship - 2018

Overview

Innovation and Entrepreneurship Programs for Hispanic College Students in the Agricultural and Food Processing Industry of California’s Central Valley is a 5-week summer session program for UC Merced undergraduate students. Participants will participate in the ongoing research activities of faculty members and receive formal instruction on innovation and entrepreneurship programs related to the agricultural and food processing industry.

Students will conduct research under the supervision of faculty mentors and their graduates. To enhance the integrated educational and research experience, students will attend formal individual and research group meetings on a weekly basis. They will also attend weekly informal brown-bag lunch meetings to report their research problems, results to date, future plans, research progress, and present short papers on some aspect of the research that they find interesting. Participants will work with mentors to contribute and advance their chosen research. The program will include a week long internship at regional food and agriculture companies and USDA research laboratories.

Stipend and Allowance

Each participant will receive a total stipend of $2,000 for 5 weeks (last week of May to June during the first summer session).

Applications must be submitted online and will be accepted through March 20, 2018.

Requirements

  • Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions.
  • Undergraduates students who will be sophomore or juniors in the fall semester of 2018, with a major in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science or a field closely related to sustainability and management.
  • Students who plan to enroll for summer courses are encouraged to apply for the fellowship.
  • Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5.
